A program of Riley Hospital for Children and Clarian Health, Riley Connections began in 2003 and was funded by The Department of Health and Human Services and administered by The Office for the Advancement of Telehealth (OAT), a division within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Riley Connections became Clarian Telemedicine, a department of Clarian Health, in 2006. Using existing video conferencing technology, Riley Connections offers live, interactive consults between patients and providers. Patients may visit a clinic in their local community and have a live "tele-appointment" with a specialist in Indianapolis from Riley Hospital for Children -- Indiana's only comprehensive children's hospital. "Real time" patient diagnostic information can be shared with the help of digitally-modified clinical devices, such as a digital stethoscope. Patients participating in a telemedicine visit should expect the same level of service compared to a routine visit. Clinic personnel at the remote site (patient site) are responsible for providing all pertinent medical records and lab results to the physician prior to the visit. Participating physicians will then send the visit dictations back to the clinic so that patient charts can be updated. Clinic nurses are present during every visit to assist the off-site provider and provide follow-up instructions to the patient based on the physician recommendations.
