Total body irradiation (TBI) is conducted to prepare a patient for bone marrow transplantation. TBI is performed in the Department of Radiation Oncology utilizing an innovative moving table therapy. This table provides optimum patient comfort and precision and allows maximum precision of shielding sensitive organs, largely by making it possible for patients undergoing TBI to lay supine or prone on the table during the time of treatment. Typically, the large distance required between the source and patient make such arrangements impossible for standard stationary TBI techniques. However, with the moving table utilized at the IU School of Medicine, the beam does not have to encompass the entire length of the body instantaneously. Moreover, a careful examination of patient dosimetry from moving table TBI treatment reveals significant improvement in dose uniformity compared to other techniques. The other disadvantage of standard techniques for TBI is the imprecision of the shielding of critical organs. To circumvent this problem with the moving table technique used in the IU Department of Radiation Oncology, the block tray above the patient is appropriately synchronized with the table motion. This innovative and valuable therapy is now used routinely for the benefit of patients undergoing TBI treatments.
