Radiology Services

Uniquely Qualified

Dedicated to the care of children, the pediatric radiology staff at Riley Hospital for Children understands providing the best possible radiology services requires special training. Riley's pediatric radiologists are affiliated with Indiana Radiology Partners (IRP), one of the largest radiology practices in the nation. They are board certified and have additionally completed a fellowship in pediatric radiology and/or have achieved a certificate of added qualification in pediatric radiology or interventional radiology. The pediatric radiology team at Riley combines its medical skills with the personal experience of working and interacting with children every day.

Riley's radiologists, certified technologists and registered nurses perform thousands of examinations each year. The department offers a full range of diagnostic and interventional imaging services including X-rays, CT scans, MR scans, cardiac MR scans, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine studies and fluoroscopy studies. Experts in diagnosing disease and injury in infants, children and adolescents, the radiologists work as part of a multidisciplinary team, along with the referring pediatrician or pediatric specialist, to provide the best possible care for children. Riley's pediatric radiologists are available to perform and interpret exams throughout the Clarian Health system.

Pediatric-Specific Equipment

Staff members at Riley understand the importance of reducing X-ray exposure to children whenever possible. The pediatric radiologists have established specific exam protocols that reduce the X-ray dosage to young patients.

Riley offers state-of-the-art radiology equipment that is specifically tailored to the needs of pediatric patients and includes the following:

  • 1.5T MR scanners with the latest technology that permits rapid image acquisition and processing
  • CT scanners that allow data to be viewed in different planes or three-dimensional images of structures such as the trachea or aorta
  • Fluoroscopy rooms, including the latest low-dose, pulsed fluoroscopy for pediatrics that can reduce X-ray dosage up to 70 percent
  • Ultrasound units with protocols specifically configured for pediatric imaging, including specialized exams of the hip, spine, head and pylorus
  • Direct radiology (DR) units allowing for faster production of higher quality images and shorter exam times

On-site interventional radiology suite

Staffed by the only pediatric interventional radiologist in Indiana, Riley's pediatric interventional radiology (IR) suite offers percutaneous interven tions using image guidance in infants, children and adolescents. The suite, located in the Radiology Department, adjacent to Riley's Outpatient Center, offers all of the facilities and equipment necessary for IR procedures to be fully contained and performed in one location. IRP's neuroradiologists also utilize the IR suite for cerebral angiography procedures. In addition to four pre- and post-procedure rooms, the suite houses an anesthesia induction room, a family consultation area and a fully digital PACS workstation for reading exams and consulting with referring physicians. The IR suite also offers the following:

  • Dose-lowering technologies
  • 3-D rotational angiography
  • Advanced digital imaging
  • Tilt table

Special Services for Procedures

Riley's pediatric radiology staff includes specially trained pediatric nurses who focus on the sedation and recovery of babies and children. Behavioral strategies, sleep deprivation and medication are used to help children hold still long enough to finish imaging. In the event additional sedation is required for a longer or more complex exam, Riley's pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in using general anesthesia.

About IRP

Affiliated with Clarian Health Partners in Indianapolis, Indiana Radiology Partners (IRP) combines unparalleled strengths in clinical practice, innovation, technology, research and academics. This combination offers patients access to care and service second to none. IRP - now numbering more than 70 radiologists - and the hospitals it serves have long been leaders in radiology. Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children are often the first in Indiana - and in many cases, the first in the nation - to begin using new radiology modalities and technologies. With each new advancement, IRP is committed to training and employing subspecialists who are experts in these new technologies.

For adults and children, IRP offers patient-focused care with high-quality imaging and sub-specialized interpretation services.
