Pediatric radiation oncology provides radiation therapy treatments to patients with pediatric malignancies seen at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Riley Hospital continues to be the primary children's hospital in Indiana, seeing the large majority of children with cancer diagnosed in Indiana. When treatment protocols for children and young adults include radiation therapy, the complicated treatment planning between family members of the pediatric oncology group and our department occur in a multi-disciplinary fashion along with child and family support services and specialists in pediatric radiology, pathology, and other specialities. Because of the complicated nature of treating children with radiation therapy, as well as the ever-changing treatment protocols, the majority of patients, including those from out of town, are treated in Indianapolis at the Department of Radiation Oncology. A considerable wealth of support resources are utilized for these treatments, including the use of the Ronald McDonald House for housing patients and families during the potentially long treatment intervals. The department's extensive experience with pediatric patients, as well as its expertise with 3-D conformal treatment planning, stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy, and interstitial implant techniques allows us to achieve gratifying results for these extremely threatening childhood problems.
