Overview

The IU-Riley Perinatal Center is a partnership between a very large and experienced group of Obstetric specialists, Neonatologists, Pediatric Surgeons, Pediatric Cardiologists, and other pediatric medical sub-specialists. The Riley Hospital for Children is one of the premier children’s hospitals in the country, providing care for 10,000 children as inpatients and over 200,000 children as outpatients annually. Established in 1924, Riley Hospital has over 350 full-time pediatric sub-specialty physicians providing cutting-edge expertise in every facet of children’s care. The Newborn Intensive Care Unit is the oldest and largest in Indiana, established in 1970, and now with 41 Neonatology faculty. The Section of Neonatal Medicine is among the finest in the country, ranked in the Top 5 by Child magazine. The Neonatology faculty are on site 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, taking care of over 200 babies daily requiring intensive care. They have trained more than 80 Pediatricians to become Neonatologists, providing one of the best three-year fellowship programs in Neonatology in the country. In addition, our Neonatologists are leaders in pioneering research, and are recognized internationally for their advances in stem cell biology, development of the blood, development of blood vessels, fetal and neonatal growth and nutrition, and surfactant and nitric oxide therapy.

The Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists are within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the first and oldest program in Obstetrics in Indiana primarily based at Indiana University Hospital. The Department has more than 30 faculty members who are full-time Obstetricians with vast experience and expertise in women’s health. The Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists also have the greatest experience and expertise in Indiana in caring for women with high risk pregnancies, having established the first high-risk obstetrics program in the state. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for immediate consultation or patient care. They provide comprehensive prenatal diagnosis, fetal and maternal care, and genetic counseling with the largest collective experience and expertise in the Indiana. The obstetric faculty also are pioneering in their research efforts in the areas of pharmacogenetics and therapeutics in maternal health.
