Tourette's and Related Chronic Tic Disorders

Tourette's disorder occurs in approximately 4 to 5 individuals per 10,000 and is more common in boys than in girls. Tics may begin as early as 2 years of age, but are usually seen later in childhood.

Tics are sudden motor movements or vocalizations. Motor tics include eye blinking, neck jerking, shoulder shrugging, and mouth movements. Vocal tics include throat clearing, sniffing, and grunting. Tourette's disorder is defined as multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics.

As of yet, there is no 'cure' for Tourette's disorder. Medication can help control motor or vocal tics. Our clinic specializes in the treatment of children with 'Tourette's plus' (Tourette's combined with other psychiatric illnesses, including ADHD and OCD). Therapy can reduce stress, decreasing tic symptoms. The Riley clinic also offers habit reversal therapy, which is useful for some complex motor tics.
