Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a normal part of everyday life. Anxiety becomes a disorder when fear or worry is uncontrollable. Some anxiety disorders that can affect children are mentioned below.

Children with separation anxiety disorder worry excessively about being away from parents or home. They may be afraid to attend school, or to stay at a friend's house. They are usually afraid of harm coming to family members or themselves, and may cry, cling or complain of headaches/stomachaches when expected to leave home.

A disorder related to social phobia is selective mutism. Children with selective mutism can talk, but refuse to talk at school or other public places.

Most anxious parents in our clinic respond to cognitive-behavioral therapy alone; we also offer medication therapy to children who don't improve with therapy. We teach the clients techniques-different thinking patterns and relaxation-that reduce anxiety.
