- Staffed by seven pediatric infectious disease specialists, a clinical nurse specialist, all exclusively dedicated to pediatric infectious disease.
- Provides care to more than 800 inpatients every year as either primary infectious disease care or as consultants to the 31 pediatric and surgical subspecialty service areas represented at Riley.
- Our pediatric infectious disease specialists also evaluate children at Methodist, Wishard, and University hospitals; and at Clarian North Medical Center.
- Provides comprehensive outpatient care through the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Disease located in the Riley Outpatient Center.
- Serves patients from 55 different Indiana counties, representing 81 percent of the state’s population, and four other states and 18 countries. Patients were referred by more than 166 primary and specialty physicians.
- Houses five subspecialty clinics:
- Pediatrics HIV/AIDS Clinic: Follows 90% of Indiana’s HIV+ children. These include children seeking care for documented HIV infection or infants who were exposed at birth and whose HIV status is under active diagnostic investigation. Counseling is provided on site at each visit.
- International Adoption Clinic: The first comprehensive clinic of its kind in Indiana and one of the busiest in the United States. This clinic screens international adoptees for infectious, developmental and other medical conditions. Children have been seen from 25 countries. This clinic is a collaboration with the Section of Developmental Pediatrics.
- Pediatric Infectious Disease/Evaluation Clinic: Clinic devoted to the evaluation of children with possible immunodeficiencies and severe recurrent or unusual infections &mdash including recurring fevers, pneumonia, and infection of bones or joints.
- Pediatric Histoplasmosis Clinic: The only pediatric histoplasmosis clinic in the country which diagnoses and treats this type of fungal infection, endemic to the Ohio River valley region.
- Pediatric Travel Medicine Clinic: The only travel medicine clinic in Indiana dedicated to providing comprehensive travel advice to families with small children and adolescents traveling overseas.
- Participates in the Indiana Medical Access and Communication Systems (IMACS), a phone network that provides diagnostic and therapeutic support to physicians through Indiana and adjacent states. Telephone numbers: 317-916-3500 or 1-800-622-4989.
- Advocates for children’s health issues, including community educational programs, collaborative efforts in support of vaccine usage, treatment guidelines for infectious illnesses and in support of state and regional legislative groups to improve screening and preventative care for Indiana’s children.
- Our faculty is responsible for educating medical students in one of the largest medical schools in the country and categorical and combined pediatric residents in a large academic program on all aspects of the care of children with infectious diseases.
