In addition to the clinical faculty, the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology consists of Diabetes Educators, Nutritionists, and Social Workers who participate in the care of children with diabetes. All of the staff have years of experience dealing with the particular difficulties faced by children with diabetes and their families. They are an invaluable source of information and support.
Dietitians
A major part of the care of the child with diabetes is healthy nutrition. Our team of Registered Dietitians specialize in diabetes education and are up-to-date on the latest dietary research and guidelines.
Nurse Educators
When your child is first diagnosed, our diabetes nurse practitioners will sit down with you and discuss what diabetes will mean to your child, how you will be able to adapt, give insulin, and monitor for dangerous signs and symptoms of high or low blood sugars. We will teach you the basics so that when you return home you will have the knowledge to safely care for your child. The pediatric nurse practitioners work together with the doctors, dietitians, and social workers to bring you the information you need to feel comfortable going home.
Social Workers
The Social Worker is a member of the Diabetes Treatment Team who supports the child, family, and staff by assessing the social situation and needs, providing access to needed resources, and assisting with problem solving.
