Patient Story: |
How old do you have to be to be on the pump? There is no minimum age required for insulin pump therapy. Your physician and your family should decide as a team if pump therapy is an option for you. Generally, our pumpers are between 8-16 years old. We do have several toddlers and younger children on pump therapy. If your child is under 5 years old, we suggest that he or she be a part of our Toddler Pump Study, which is being conducted by Dr. Linda DiMeglio. Your physician can discuss this option with you. What is the process for starting insulin pump therapy?Once your physician and family decide that pump therapy is an option for you, you will be referred to our Insulin Pump Program Coordinator. You will receive information about the different pumps and start the process of transitioning to pump therapy with help from the team. Who is part of the team?Jill Meier, RN CPNP will coordinate your transition process and help you get the necessary paperwork to your insurance company. She is certified by Medtronic, Animas, Smith's Medical, and Disetronic, the four manufacturers of insulin pumps, and she conducts all training classes and helps you and your family make adjustments after pump therapy is initiated. Jennifer Cleveland, RD is one of our pediatric diabetes dietitians. She is an expert on insulin pump therapy, nutrition, and diabetes. She can review your insulin regimen, and help teach you how to count carbohydrates and use carb-to-insulin ratios. Of course, you, your family, and diabetes physician are also part of the team, and you will continue to see us every 3-4 months for your routine clinic visits.
