Child Life Interns will:
- assist in providing support to pediatric patients and families
- have the opportunity to communicate and interact with patients and families on a one-to-one basis and in groups
- become acquainted with the needs of hospitalized children, adolescents and families, and recognize creative, flexible activity programming
- plan, organize, coordinate, implement, and evaluate activity programming
- gain exposure with other child-related services: school, closed circuit television, Music Therapy, Cheer Guild, Riley Family Library, as well as other disciplines within the hospital setting
- gain experience in supervising and interacting with volunteers
- develop an understanding of how the multidisciplinary team's efforts are required in affecting positive experiences for pediatric patients and families
- meet and work with the multidisciplinary team
- examine the strengths and limitations of their coursework while gaining professional growth in attitude, maturity and judgment
- have the opportunity to gain leadership skills
- complete a self-evaluation using professional standards under the guidance of experienced practitioners.
Requirements of the Internship
- The Internship will be full time (40 hours of work/week), 16 weeks in duration, for a minimum of 600 completed hours. Intern hours will vary depending on the rotation assignment. Evening and weekend hours may be required. The hospital schedule will be followed, therefore university breaks and/or vacation days must be negotiated prior to the internship.
- The terms of the internship will be outlined in a contract and agreed upon prior to the start of the internship.
