Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Taking Charge: 2000 & Beyond
Sponsoring department: Community Education This 13-hour, 4-unit module and youth
project handbook for middle school teachers was developed in collaboration with Indiana
Family & Consumer Sciences, Indiana Department of Education. The module explores
setting of standards, conflict resolution skills, making decisions, and choosing abstinence.
A youth handbook provides self-directed activities for young people addressing issues
explored through the curriculum.
Tobacco Use Prevention
TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use)
Sponsoring department: Community Education
A core team of "super trainers" who are respiratory therapists at Riley Hospital serve
as lead trainers and mentors for the department's tobacco use prevention and cessation
education programs. Over 100 adult facilitators representing 38 Indiana counties have
been trained to teach teens to present TATU to peers and younger students. Fifty
"super trainers" have been trained to conduct TATU training workshops for adults.
TATU promotes education and information through young people teaching young people
about not smoking tobacco and about the health and environmental consequences of
smoking tobacco. Annual TATU adult facilitator workshops and mailings to TATU facilitators
and presenters are offered.
Informed Choice

This slide presentation, available for loan, teaches students grades 5-12 the consequences
of smoking tobacco.
Nutrition Education
Everything Under the Sun
Sponsoring department: Community Education A practical, interactive 1 ½ hour workshop
introduces childcare providers to activities and resources for teaching preschoolers and
families about making healthy choices for good nutrition daily.
Education brochures

A series of education brochures was developed in collaboration with the Indiana
University School of Allied Health Nutrition & Dietetics Internship Program. Brochures
were developed for school age and middle school students and are available to teachers
and parents in camera-ready format. Topics include: good breakfasts, smart choices for
fast foods, exercise and nutrition, and healthy eating.
Snack Attack

This two-hour class session introduces elementary school age children to how to make
healthy and fun snacks. Children make snack recipes in class and learn about how the
body digests the food we eat every day.

Toilet Training for Toddlers: information materials and 1 hour presentation.

Shaken Infant Syndrome: information on the consequences of shaking babies and
alternative steps for parents in crisis situations.
GRADS-Graduation, Reality, and Dual-Based Roles Skills
