Hoppin' for Health - Lesson 1: Do You Know Your Body Parts?

"One of the first things that medical professionals learn about when they go to school is the parts of the body. Today, we are going to learn about the parts of the body, too."

Objectives:

Activity A:

"My Body Book" is the basic outline for this fun project. There are 4 squares that become "pages" when the entire sheet is folded in half, and then in half again. Children can either use old magazines to locate the body parts listed in the book (you'll need scissors and glue), or crayons to draw their body parts on each of the pages.

Activity B:

Use the Hoppin' for Health spokes-bunnies to help children identify body parts from the outside of the body. Two handouts are provided in this packet; one for girls and one for boys. The children can cut out the words at the bottom of the sheet, and paste each word to match the right body part.

Activity C:

First, review the basic body parts with the children to make sure that they can identify the basic body parts. Then, have the children lie on the floor and trace each other on big pieces of paper (rolled bulletin board or mural paper). They can then glue pre-cut pieces of paper that are in the shapes of internal body parts, such as lungs, heart, stomach, and brain, onto their traced body image. Explain the function of each part and where it is located in their body. They will hear it, touch it, and place it.
