INDIANAPOLIS – On Wednesday, Feb. 17, six members of the Riley Hospital for Children cardiovascular surgery team (also known as the Riley Heart Team) will leave on a medical mission trip to the Middle Eastern nation of Jordan – marking the team's sixth trip to the country within the past three years. To date, the team has successfully performed congenital heart repairs on more than 50 children since their first trip to Jordan in 2007. On this trip, the team is scheduled to operate on 12 children from the region.
The goal of each of the team's medical mission trips is to provide life-sustaining heart surgeries and clinical services to children with congenital heart defects who would not otherwise receive medical care. In addition to providing care, the team will work to strengthen relationships with physicians, medical support personnel, local medical facilities and philanthropic support organizations in Middle East countries such as Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Egypt – all with the ultimate hope of building a coalition of hospitals and establishing sites for future collaboration between international health care providers and Riley physicians back in the U.S.
To stay connected, the team will provide daily updates to their families, friends and colleagues through their blog, describing their daily interactions with the parents, children and clinicians in Amman, Jordan. For ongoing updates on the team's trip, visit their blog at http://rileymiddleeastmissions.wordpress.com.
The team will leave on an American Airlines flight from Indianapolis International Airport on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. They are scheduled to return to Indianapolis on Friday, Feb. 26.
