Popular Kids dart. Drive smart. Campaign to Launch Statewide
08/07/2009
Signage, designed to engage community and raise awareness of child pedestrian injuries, will be distributed at more than 70 locations in 25 cities throughout Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS - On Monday, August 10, Riley Hospital for Children, Kohl's, AAA Hoosier Motor Club, the Indiana Transportation Museum and 16 hospitals will launch Kids dart. Drive smart. – the unique, popular grassroots campaign designed to remind adults to slow down, stay alert and remain focused while driving, now that children are heading back to school.
| WHAT: |
2009 Kids dart. Drive smart. Campaign Kick-off |
| WHEN: |
Monday, August 10 9am – 6pm |
| WHERE: |
Indiana State Fair, 1202 E. 38th St. Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion |
As part of the statewide launch, Riley Hospital and its partners are making Kids dart. Drive smart. yard signs available at no cost, while supplies last, for neighborhoods, schools, churches, businesses and homes in an effort to significantly reduce child pedestrian injuries by engaging the community and raising awareness.
During the campaign kick-off at the Indiana State Fair Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion, Riley Hospital will also be hosting auditions for the next Kids dart. Drive smart. video, as well as offering an interactive pedestrian safety course that will teach children and parents best practices in pedestrian safety.
This year's campaign also aims to educate the community about distracted driving, including talking and/or texting on a cell phone while driving. Handouts and bookmarks will be available discussing the dangers of distracted driving and will also supply parents with a list (and meaning) of the top 30 texting acronyms and codes to help parents understand what their children are saying.
In 2007, more than 42,000 children were injured as pedestrians in the United States. From 1999-2006, Clarian hospitals, including Riley Hospital for Children, treated 733 children ages 17 and younger for pedestrian injuries.
Throughout the duration of the Kids dart. Drive smart. campaign, yard signs will be available via hospital partners and AAA Hoosier Motor Club locations statewide:
