INDIANAPOLIS – Miss America 2009 Katie Stam visited Indianapolis Wednesday (April 1) in support of Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana's only Children's Miracle Network hospital. Since being crowned in January, Miss Stam has frequently referred to her role as National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network as a highlight of her Miss America experience.
As part of her visit, Miss America toured Riley Hospital and met with patients and families. She also spoke at the annual Walmart and Sam's Club Appreciation Day luncheon held at historic Union Station in downtown Indianapolis. Miss Stam was joined by Riley patient A.J. Stinger, the 2009 Indiana ambassador for "Champions Across America presented by Walmart and Sam's Club." A.J. and his parents –Tom and Deb–talked about their recent visits to The White House and Walt Disney World, and the "potential" A.J. has realized in his journey with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
This event, hosted by Riley Children's Foundation, honors Walmart and Sam's Club as the number one corporate donor for Riley Hospital and Children's Miracle Network. Miss America 2009 Katie Stam thanked approximately 300 Walmart and Sam's Club associates, managers, and district and regional employees for their efforts. This past year, 135 Walmart and Sam's Club locations raised a record $1.4 million for Riley Hospital. Since 1988, Walmart and Sam's Club have raised more than $14.1 million for Riley Hospital.
Other speakers included Kevin O'Keefe, president and CEO, Riley Children's Foundation; Dr. Richard Schreiner, physician-in-chief, Riley Hospital for Children; and Julie Murphy, vice president and regional general manager of operations, Walmart Stores, Inc.

A.J. Stinger is a remarkable third grade student from Marion, Ind., who has shown tremendous courage in his fight against acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and who has turned his experience into compassion for other children and families through personal philanthropic efforts. A.J. is in remission now, but he still takes daily chemotherapy medication for maintenance.
A.J. had the opportunity to meet President Obama in late March while participating in 2009 "Champions Across America presented by Walmart and Sam's Club." Champions Across America, a Children's Miracle Network program, designates a Champion child in every state who has bravely battled and triumphed despite a serious injury or illness.
A.J. is an excellent ambassador for Riley Hospital and Indiana because he knows, as he often says, "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the doctors and nurses at Riley who took care of me." A.J. had never flown or visited Walt Disney World or Washington, D.C. prior to the Champions Across America experience.
