IUSM/Riley Faculty Volunteering in Other Locations Around the World
- Kimberly Applegate - is active with the international outreach of the RSNA and spent time in Malaysia. She is also on sabbatical in Australia and working with the College of Radiology to link to the American College activities, especially their imaging guidelines.
- John Breinholt III - annually participates with a group that goes to Bolivia (Santa Cruz) to perform cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterizations for indigent children.
- John Christenson - is working on an analysis of optimal TB screening strategies for HIV infected children in the AMPATH program Has been involved with two educational projects for health care professionals; one in Guatemala; and the other in Ghana, West Africa.
- Mark Corkins - does mission work through his church. He has done short-term medical missions for Mayan Indian villages in northern Guatemala, also El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. Mark also serves on the board of Hope International which directs missions work in the Dominican Republic and sponsors an annual medical mission.
- William Engle - spends a week in Haiti (Saintard) on a medical and dental mission each year. This is associated with his church and Missions Haiti Midwest.
- Anne Farrell and Mark Turrentine and colleagues were able to operate on 9 children with congenital heart disease (5 Iraqi, 1 Palestine, and 3 Jordanian). She is also going to Jordan to participate in open heart surgeries for 11 children from Jordan and Iraq.
- John Lubicky - started His relationship with Lithuanian Children's Hope in 1989 while Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago, IL. Since then, a team of physicians & nurses have been making annual trips to Vilnius University Children's Hospital to provide direct patient care, as well as medical education. All but 1 of the orthopedic surgeons from that hospital have spent periods of time in Chicago for mini-pediatric orthopedic fellowships.
- Jean Molleston - participated in a church mission trip to Guatemala.
- Daniel Neely - Participated with ORBIS International to provide ophthalmic surgical services on the organization's DC-10 flying eye hospital, as well as in local hospital settings. Countries visited include: Vietnam (3 times), Cambodia and Jamaica. Also serves as a telemedicine consultant to physicians in these countries. He is also involved with the Cyber Sight area, a telemedicine project currently set up at over 130 centers in 45 countries where foreign ophthalmologists can get (free) consultation on cases from a large group of US faculty members via the web.
Dr. Neely is working with ORBIS to help train pediatric ophthalmologists from Cambodia to help upgrade the skills of eye care professionals in Cambodia. This article details his efforts.
- David Alan Plager - is also involved with ORBIS International's flying eye hospital. He has done plane and ground missions in Cuba (twice), Viet Nam (twice), Cambodia, and China. He is also involved with the Cyber Sight area telemedicine project.
- Jamie Renbarger - has traveled for several years to a small town in Northern Peru to provide clinical patient care through a medical mission group called Por Los Ninos. This opportunity is open to residents, fellows, dental fellows, and all faculty.
- Neal Simon - participates in medical missions to Ecuador in the highlands outside of the capital Quito and was involved in developing a neonatal unit for a hospital in Quito that serves as the main hospital for the area.
- Kerstin Sobus - has participated in two church mission projects, one in Guatemala and the other in Haiti. She also does fund-raising and spiritual support for Guatemala. Here are pictures from my trip to Guatemala. I spent time with a medical mission trip to rural Guatemala and to an orthopedic hospital to donate braces and to a children's home and to do some rehabilitation teaching.
- Rajiv Sood - does yearly mission trips to El Salvador focusing on pediatric cleft lip, palate hand and burn deformities. The team includes 20-24 nurses, therapists and residents from Riley and Wishard. This year, they successfully raised 1 million dollars to help build a new pediatric burn center in San Salvador, which will be the only pediatric burn center in Central America.
- John Stevens - is a founding board member and the vice chairman for Friends of Honduran Children. This organization has generated in excess of $3 million in cash and in kind donations to help the children of Honduras since its inception in 2001. For the last nine years, he led annual medical brigades to rural Honduras. He has also continued to work with the yet to open tertiary children's hospital, Hospital Maria in Tegucigalpa.
- Rosa Ten - goes annually to Cuzco, Peru to deliver medical care in a very poor area of Cuzco.
- Mark Turrentine - is leading a cardiovascular surgical team going to Jordan to perform open heart surgery on 11 children from Jordan and Iraq.
- Scott Walker - serves as an anesthesia team leader on a volunteer surgical mission to Guatemala City, Guatemala. This provides underprivileged children surgery on a one-week mission. Scott has also gone to Lucena, Philippines with Operation Smile on a one week surgical plastic surgery mission (1999).
- David Weaver - is involved in supporting an orphanage and boy's center in Mombassa, Kenya. His involvement has been through St. Paul Episcopal Church. Their interest is primarily in reducing extreme poverty .
