From training health care professionals in neonatal resuscitation in Mexico and Kenya to instructing surgeons in new techniques in Nigeria, Kosovo, and Malaysia to teaching counseling in West African countries experiencing violent conflict to lecturing at medical schools and conferences around the globe, IUSM/Riley faculty extend their quest to provide top quality medical education internationally.
IUSM/Riley Faculty Participating in International Education
- Kelly Anderson - will present a presentation to nurses and physicians in Calnali, Mexico on NRP.
- John Christenson - went with 2nd and 3rd year medical students to Calnali, Mexico.
- D. Wade Clapp - mentors a M.D. / Ph.D. student from Kenya and formerly one from Palestine. He is also a reviewer for Welcome-Trust-England.
- David Dunn - teaches counseling in post-conflict areas as part of the West Africa Trauma Team.
- Anne Farrell - gave a lecture on cyanotic heart disease to the staff at Al-Khadi Hospital in Amman, Jordan.
- Bhuwan Garg - went to New Delhi, India and gave lectures at an Indo - US Neurology Conference.
- Meredith Golomb - will present at a symposium in China.
- Jill Helphinstine - is an advisory board member in the Global Interfaith Partnership, a group of several churches and faith groups from Indianapolis work with church groups for Kenya to support orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Randall Loder - the lead author on two international studies regarding various pediatric orthopedic aspects. He also co-authored A System of Pediatric Orthopaedics.
- Diane Lorant - Diane takes medical students to Calnali, Mexico during spring break annually. For two years she has taught NRP to local Calnali, Mexico healthcare workers.
- John Lubicky - goes annually (since 1992) to Lithuania and helps train the pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and their anesthesiologist.
- Daniel Neely - has trained many international fellows in pediatric ophthalmology, including those from Israel, Japan, Viet Nam, India, and South Korea.
- Donald Orr - has accepted several medical students from Germany, and one Japanese pediatric resident for rotations in adolescent medicine.
- Hema Patel - went to New Delhi, India and gave lectures at an Indo - US Neurology Conference.
- David Plager - trained many international fellows in pediatric ophthalmology from Israel, Japan, Viet Nam, India, and South Korea.
- Brenda Poindexter - worked with an organization called Babies Without Borders. This is headed by a neonatologist whose goal is to provide outreach and education in neonatology in Latin America. She gives talks on how neonatal programs can improve the growth of premature infants post-discharge despite limited resources and limited availability of formula and human milk fortifiers.
- Frederick Rescorla - goes bi-annually to teach hands-on, pediatric surgical procedures in Nigeria, Kenya, Kosovo, and Malaysia.
- Richard Rink - lectures around the world.
- Michael Risinger - went to New Delhi, India and gave lectures at an Indo - US Neurology Conference.
- John Sidle - teaches classes in a research methodology training curriculum and in the HIV/AIDS clinical training courses run by the MUSOM and AMPATH. He also routinely supervises both Kenyan and American medical students and physicians, and has also been involved with resident and physician educational projects in Guatemala for close to 18 years and in Ghana for close to 9.
- Sarah Stelzner - directs the medical education components of the Calnali Health Education Outreach Program, supervising the medical students.
- John Stevens - arranged for the donation of pulmonary function testing equipment, ventilators and pediatric bronchoscopes to Honduras ' tertiary pulmonary hospital, Instituto Nacional del ´Tórax. He and Lisa Bendy, from Riley setup and instructed the hospital personnel in the use of this equipment. He has also lectured at the Honduran National Pediatric Congress on various pediatric pulmonary topics.
- Naomi Swiezy - has trained a staff personnel on a one-week HANDS training.
- Alvaro Tori - is involved in the Calnali- Mexico project. He has taught the nurses and physicians neonatal resuscitation.
- Laurence Walsh - went to India and gave lectures at an Indo- US Neurology Conference.
